In order to examine whether schizophrenia is related to alterations in the expression of acute phase plasma protein concentrations. We measured in 18 schizophrenic male patients and age matched 18 normal male controls positive APPs such as
haptoglobin,
¥á1-antitrypsin, ceruloplasmin, complement component C3C and negative APPs such as albumin, transferrin.
We found a significant increase of haptoglobin, ¥á1-antitrypsin, ceruloplasmin level and decreased trend of albumin, transferrin level in schizophrenia as compared with normal control. There was no significant correlation between APPs level and
BPRS,
PANSS score. Elevated levels of positive APPs and a drop in negative APPs constitute important indicators of immune activation.
Authors suppose that alteration of APPs in schizophrenia may be related with elevation of interleuiklin6 level in that illness.
